Reports suggest that a pending free agent from the New York Jets might be staying within the AFC East this offseason. NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed on social media that defensive lineman Carl Lawson visited the Miami Dolphins on April 10.

The Jets signed Lawson to a three-year contract worth $45 million in 2021, banking on his potential despite his lack of previous double-digit sack seasons. Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from showcasing his talents on the field. After suffering an Achilles injury during a practice session against the Green Bay Packers, Lawson missed the entire 2021 season and played in 2022 with a compromised Achilles due to another injury. Despite these setbacks, he managed to play in all 17 games in 2022 and recorded seven sacks.

The Jets’ interest in Lawson’s free agency pursuits is tied to the NFL’s compensatory pick system. New York received three compensatory selections for the free agents they lost the previous year. However, to secure higher compensatory picks in 2025, they need some of their pending free agents to sign “compensatory eligible contracts before April 28th” with other teams. With Justin Hardee already signing with the Cleveland Browns, the Jets are keeping a close eye on Lawson’s situation, as his signing with another team before the deadline could potentially secure them a fourth-round draft pick. Other notable pending free agents for the Jets include Mekhi Becton and Ashtyn Davis.
