Dolphins Considered as a Possible Destination for Former Vikings Starter

The Miami Dolphins, who experimented with 12 different offensive line combinations throughout the 2023 season, may still be seeking reinforcements in that area. One potential addition is Dalton Risner, a former starter for the Minnesota Vikings. David Kenyon of Bleacher Report suggests that the Dolphins are considering Risner as a possible acquisition.

“Are we revisiting this scenario? Last year, Dalton Risner remained unsigned until Week 3, when the Minnesota Vikings offered him a one-year, $3 million contract,” Kenyon noted in his April 28 column, where he ranked the top 10 NFL free agents available post-draft. “During his tenure, he allowed zero sacks and was called for only three penalties across 745 snaps, as per Pro Football Focus. While Risner may not shine as a star, his performance last season showcased his capabilities as a starting-caliber guard.”

Risner, aged 28, was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. After spending three seasons with the Broncos, he joined the Vikings.

It would be beneficial for the Dolphins to add depth to their offensive line, considering the signings of Isaiah Wynn, Robert Jones, and Kendall Lamm during the offseason. They also secured Aaron Brewer to a three-year deal as their starting center.

Despite drafting Patrick Paul in the second round, Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald suggests that Paul’s chances of competing for a starting role are slim. According to Kelly’s April 29 column, which explores positions needing upgrades, Paul’s lanky frame and limited movement skills might hinder his ability to compete for a starting guard position.

Kelly proposes that acquiring a backup interior player like Risner or Lucas Patrick would be advantageous, especially considering the O-line’s injury struggles last year. Risner, who signed a one-year deal worth $4 million with the Minnesota Vikings in September, has history with O-line coach Butch Barry from their time together in Denver. This familiarity could prove either beneficial or detrimental, depending on their relationship.

Despite joining the Minnesota Vikings on September 18, 2023, Risner secured a starting position, appearing in 11 games out of 15. Throughout his five-year career, he has played in 15 games each season.

In an interview with Vince Lovergine of WIBW 13 on April 17, Risner highlighted his value to a team like the Miami Dolphins. “I realize I’m not the league’s best guard, but I’ve started 75 games in my five-year career. I’m consistent and reliable, showing up every Sunday without fail due to injury. I’m committed to giving my all, blocking formidable opponents like Chris Jones. Despite being undervalued, I persist and contribute,” stated Risner.

Risner expressed his surprise and disappointment, stating, “I played 11 games, and they counted on me every Sunday.” He had anticipated a shift in his situation after signing late in the 2023 offseason. “I thought things would change this offseason,” he remarked. “Yet here I am in April, almost May, without a job.”
